The Rocking Thunders and on Bass...

Fred Severin

Nonni "Big Boom Bass" Severin discovered the acoustic guitar at the age of fourteen, during the days rock 'n roll started to rule the world. He decided to take lessons, and ended up with Luut Buysman, guitarist of the "Kilama Hawaians".

After two years of lessons he became interested in the bassguitar and soon he made the rock 'n roll style his own by listening to "The Ventures" and "The Shadows".

In 1960 he started up his first band "The Rocking Thunders" with a couple of schoolmates. They had weekly performances across the country, and finally they won the "Radio Veronica Talent Award" in 1964 which took place among artists from Holland.

In 1968 he played in the famous Dutch rock 'n roll group "Roek Williams and the Fighting Cats" with bandmates like "Will Luikinga" (saxophone) and "Pierre van de Linden" (of the group "Focus") on drums.

In 1969 he replaced "Lanny Bouman" in the group "Daddy's Act" from the hit record "Eight Days a Week", for a couple of months.

In 1970 he decided to take a rest, what took six years. After that period he picked up the bassguitar again to change his style to soul-music. After five years he even became a well respected jazz musician.

In 1985 Nonni received a call from "Cor van der Beek" drummer of "Shocking Blue" (world hit record: "Venus") to join this band with "Robbie van Leeuwen" and lady-singer "Mariska Veres". Rehearsals followed but because of organisation circumstances the band never climbed the stage again.

In 1986 he joined the dutch rock 'n roll group "Renee and the Alligators" of the big instrumental hits "Alligator Boogie", "In the Mood", "La Comparsa" and vocal hits like "High Time He went" and "Sweet Nothings". With this group he toured across Europe as support act for bands like "The Fortunes", "The Marmelade", "The Swinging Blue Jeans", "Rubettes", "Dave Berry", "Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich", "The Sweet", and replaced the bassplayer from the "Love Affair" (World hit record: "Everlasting Love") on a gig in Holland. He also played the bass on several gigs with the legendary "Andy Tielman" ("Tielman Brothers") in 1998.

In the year 2000 he replaced the bass-player of "fire fingers Magic Dave" (Hollands nineteen year old rock 'n roll talent ) on a gig in Scheveningen and... that's what he keeps doing!!!

Last but not least, I accepted this crazy idea from Lanny to join The Rocking Thunders, fun, fun, fun, after 30 plus years, unbelievable !
